ZUZAN ISMAIL

Legal Counsel, Volvo Group

“THE PROGRAM EXCEEDED MY EXPECTATIONS! I WAS WORRIED I WOULDN’T BE ABLE TO KEEP UP, COMING FROM A LEGAL BACKGROUND RATHER THAN A FINANCIAL ONE – BUT THAT ACTUALLY TURNED OUT TO BE AN ADVANTAGE.”

What sparked your interest in the Growth through Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) program, and what did you hope to learn?

My former manager, who had heard great things about SSE Executive Education, recommended the program. We had been looking for a training course in business valuation at the right level. Most of what we found was either too basic or too comprehensive, so this felt like the perfect fit.

As an M&A lawyer, business valuation plays a key role in every transaction I work on. While I’m not the one doing the valuation, it’s important for me to understand what it’s based on when drafting and negotiating the terms of a deal. I felt I could be a better lawyer with a deeper understanding of the financial aspects.

Did the program live up to your expectations?

It exceeded them! I was initially concerned about not having a finance background, but it actually helped me approach the program content from a different angle. Overall, the diversity of the group was a real strength – everyone contributed different perspectives and experiences, which enriched the discussions.

Networking was another major benefit of the program. There were plenty of coffee breaks and lunches that made it easy to meet new people and build meaningful connections.

Have you been able to apply what you learned in your work?

Just a few weeks after completing the program, we were involved in an acquisition, and for the first time, I truly understood the structure behind the valuation. That allowed me to contribute to the early-stage discussions and engage more deeply in shaping the deal.

What would you say to someone considering the program?

If you’re curious about business valuation and financial reporting, don’t hesitate. It’s a highly rewarding program, and whether you work directly with valuations or come from a different background, I guarantee you’ll walk away with new skills and insights.

“THE GROUP SIZE WAS JUST RIGHT – IT MADE IT POSSIBLE TO CONNECT WITH EVERYONE DURING THE PROGRAM. HEARING ABOUT OTHER COMPANIES’ CHALLENGES AND REFLECTIONS WAS ALSO VERY INSIGHTFUL.”

What made you choose the Growth through Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) program?

I was drawn to the program because of its broad scope – it covers all the key components of valuation in a cohesive and structured way. I also wanted to sharpen my valuation skills and deepen my understanding of what drives value in a company.

How has the program influenced your work?

One example is that I’ve learned to better explain how the business can optimize its use of capital in simpler terms.

What was the networking experience like?

The group size was perfect – small enough to connect with everyone. It was also very valuable to hear about the challenges and reflections from other companies.

What would you say to someone thinking about joining?

I highly recommend the program. It exceeded my expectations thanks to its clear and pedagogical structure – each module built on the last in a logical and easy-to-follow way. The balance between self-study and work was also well thought out, making it manageable alongside a full-time job.

Managing Director, Howden Sweden

“I CAN HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PROGRAM TO ANYONE WHO WANTS A STRONGER GRASP OF FINANCIAL STATEMENT ANALYSIS, DISCOUNTED CASH FLOW VALUATIONS, AND HOW TO APPLY THEORY IN PRACTICE.”

What made you interested in the Growth through Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) program, and what were you hoping to learn?

I wanted to refresh my knowledge of financial statement analysis and valuation since my time at SSE. This program offered exactly what I was looking for.

Have you been able to use the knowledge in your current role?

Yes, I work as a financial advisor, and many of our clients are either listed or private companies actively looking to acquire. Being able to speak their language and truly understand their needs is a huge advantage.

What would you say to someone considering the program?

I can warmly recommend it to anyone who wants to deepen their understanding of financial statement analysis, traditional discounted cash flow models, and how to implement theory in real-world settings.
